The Volunteers.
A Government parade of the First . Canterbury Battalion took place yesterday ' evening, on the drillshed ground. Lieu- ! tenant- Colonel Tosswill was in command, j Major Joyce, Captain and Adjutant j Francis, and Captain Linn, Battalion Quartermaster, were present. The follow- j ing was the strength of the various companies :-r j A. City Guards, Captain Bishop 37 , B. College Kifles, Captain Harper t ... S4 C. Chrißtchurch Kiflea. Captain Eieharda ... 52 D. Sydenham Bifles, Captain Coxon ii > E. Scottish Bifles Captain Uampbrll 51 | F. Kichruond Rifles, t'aptaiu Bowrou 48 G. Irish Rifles, Captaiu J oughrey -tS Band, Bandmaster SearoU £1 Total 33 The Battalion was handed over to the Adjutant, who exercised it in opening in column from front to rear, and vice versd, wheeling into line, and the manual and bayonet exercise. The work was creditably done, though it was apparent that there are some recruits in the ranks who need a little instruction in their bayonet drill.
