The usual quarterly meeting of the Lyttelton Licensing Committee will be held on June 2, at uoon. ■ The racehorses Eocket, Spa-Je Guinea, Peter Osbeck, and Teddy Ymlte, arrived from north by the Tacawera yesterday afternoon. There will be an organ recital this evening, in the Durham street. Wealeyan Church, by Mr E. Trist Searell, on behalf of the choir f unds of the church. The meeting of the Christchurch Eifle Club, convened for yesterday evening, did not take place, owing to the fact that only a very email number of members put in an appearance. The folio wing have been elected unopposed to fill the vacancies on the Heathoote Eoad Board :— E. J. Palmer (Bromley Ward), N. Brown (North Opawa), R. Allan (Hillaborough), E. Martindale (Heathcote Valley). There ia every probability of an early attempt being made to obtain an artetsian water Kiipply in Eangiora— subscriptions to the amount of £00 towards the cost of sinking a well having been promised within the past few days. Alter the election of the School Committee for the Lyttelton district, on Monday, general dissatisfaction was expressed by those present <vith reference to the provisions of the Aot with regard to votes and voting. It appears that each householder is entitled to seven votes, which he is allowed to dispose of as he wishes, and at Monday's meeting the custom known as " plumping " (i c., giving the seven votes to one candidate) was freely indulged in. As an instance, it may be stated that one of the successful candidates received votes from , fourteen persons, nine of whom " plumped" j for him, while one of the defeated candi- j dates received votes from thirty persona, j nearly all of which were, however, singles. ] A meeting of promoters of the Landergan J testimonial was held in St John's Schoolroom ! yesterday evening at 4.30. It was then ! decided that the testimonial should take [ the form of an illuminated address, and, ! after the appointment of a secretary, the : meeting adjourned. ; Our Timaru correspondent wires as follows : — The interminable case, Gibson t. Wilson, still drags on, to the inexpressible delight of the lawyers and the disgust of the crowd of witnesses. I have not been in Court to-day for the very sufficient reason that a case like this is dangerous to the lay reason. The jury this afternoon begged His Honor to pity their sad condition. Most of them are middle-aged heads of households, and are accustomed to sit in comfortable chairs. , Now they are condemned to eit on the hard wooden seats of the jury box, and they asked that their wooden lot might bo softened. His Honor pitied them, and directed the officials to supply blankets ( for the distressed jurors. The lock-up blankets will probably be utilised. In connection with the Eyreton Public Library, the annual public . meeting of householders was held on . Friday laat. Mr E O. Dixon was voted to the chair. Mr Fairweatber proposed, j and Mr Denfcon seconded — " That a hearty ; vote of thanka be accorded to Mr Chilton ' for his cervices as Chairman, to Mr H. j Martin as Treasurer, and to the outgoing ) Committee." Messrs Chilton and Martin i in a few words, acknowledged the same, j Mr H. Martin explained the reason that j the annual meeting had not been called at i an earlier date. Mr Denton addressed the meeting as to the desirability of inducing the young men of the district to take greater interest in the library and to become members. Mr Denton then proposed — -" That Messrs E. O. Dixon, William Beale, George Chilton, Gemge Butters, Ernest Fairweather, Isaac Denton, M. H. Todd, and Francis Moore, jun., be elected a new Committee to serve for the remainder of the current year." Mr Fair- i weather (seconded the proposition, which ] was carried. The Secretary was requested to write to the members of the newlyelected Committee, requesting them to me3t on Wednesday, April 27. The meeting then terminated.
