Selwyn County Council.
THIS DAY. The monthly meeting of the Selwyn County Council was held this morning; present — Mr J. D. Enyß (in the chair), and Messrs H. W. Peryman, B. Westenra, W. Dunlop, J. Eennie, and T. H. Anson. chairman's statement. The Chairman said the following correspondence has been received since hist meeting : — Dobbin's Ford. Letters from Mr Bennett and Mr Dobbin, respecting the post of fordsman. Bail way Reform League. — Circular from the New Zealand Railway Reform League, relative
to the revision of rates. Imperial Institute. — Circular from the Hon the Colonial Treasurer, relative to the establishment of the Imperial Institute. Queen's Jubilee. — Prom the Committee of the Queen's Jubilee, enclosing subscription lists. Drainage of Ellesmere. — Letter from Ellesmere Road Board, asking for a grant of £30 for opening up Oollison's Creek. Hospital and Charitable Aid. — Letters from the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards enclosing statement of contribu- j tions required from the Council for the current year. Prom the Bailer County Council regarding the maintenance of Hospitals and Charitable Institutions. Licensing Committees. — Prom the Minister of Justice, stating that the question of the election of Licensing Committees for three yeais would receive consideration. Legalising Roads. — The South Wairarapa County Council wrote on the question of legalising roads. Plantation Reserves. — From the Official Assignee in respect to the planta- j tion reserves leases of Messrs M'Phedran and Leslie. Tenders had been received for leasing parts of the New Brighton reserves. Loans. — The Council had received £4500 on account of the loans granted to it under the Government Loans to Local ' Bodies Act. Special meeting. — A special ] meeting of the Council must be held next ! month to consider the annual balancesheet. Water Races. — A petition was re- ; ceived from ratepayers, asking to be transferred from the Malvern Water Race District to the Waimakariri District. Mr Sheate had forwarded a claim for damage to his property by the construction of the Greendale Water Race. The usual reports , bad been received from the overseers of the races. dobbin's ford. The correspondence re this matter was read and considered. The appointment of ! Mr Dobbin as fordsman was confirmed. BAII/WAT REFORM. j The petition of the Railway Reform League was read and referred to the Standing Committee. IMPERIAL INSTITUTE. The Hon the Colonial Treasurer's circular was laid upon the table. queen's jubilee. The Secretary was directed to acknowledge the receipt of the circular re the j Queen's Jubilee, the consideration of which ' was postponed. ELLESMERE ROAD BOARD. The Council discussed the letter from this Board, and resolved that they could j not make a grant for the improvement of private property. HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID. The Charitable /id Board wrote asking ■ for payment of J21385 Is, the contribution for this year. j The Treasurer -was instructed to send a \ copy of the allocation to each Road Board, j The Hospital Board wrote asking for i £1454 7s, and this was similarly treated. j The circular from the Bailer County j Council was read, and referred to the Standing Committee to report upon at next meeting. TAI TAPU. A letter from the Tai Tapu Road Board, j relative to clearing the lower end of the ' River Halswell, was referred to the Springs ; Road Board. LEGALISING BOADB. The Council considered that the diffi- ' culties pointed out by the Wairarapa Council did not existin Canterbury, and resolved to inform that Council that no necessity ; existed for action here. BLA.UGHTER HOUSE INSPECTION. ! Mr O'Callaghun reported favourably of the slaughter- houses in the district, buc called attention to the excessive number of ; sheep slaughtered at the Templeton ; factory. NEW BRIGHTON REBERVB. The highest tender, that of Mr Manhire, ; was accepted for 85 acres at New Brighton, and Mr George King's for another part of the reserve. j SPECIAL MEETING. ' The special meeting was fixed for Wednesday, May 18, at 10.30 a.m. WATER-RACEB. The petition from the Malvern district was referred to the Water- race Committee. Mr Sheate's claim was referred to the Water- race Committee. Mr Davio's reports were read and approved, and several applications were dealt with. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of JE2012 Os 4d ] were passed for payment. SPECIAL MEETING. At noon a special meeting wag held, and a resolution altering the boundaries of the ridings as previously agreed to was duly 1 confirmed. j
