A terrible typhoon occurred at Shimoda, China, on Deo. 19. Six junks were wrecked at Ena-mura, one at Toknura, two junks and one sailing ship at Wakaura, fifteen junto at Nabeca, with seventeen lives lost; twenty at Koina, forty at Eitauro-mura, and fifty-six at Irimamura. Tea miners, including a father and two sons, met a fearful fate at the Houghton colliery, near Barnsley. Having completed their day's toil, the poor fellows entered the cage and oegan the ascent to the surface. The rope breaking through overwinding, the cage and its unfortunate occupants were precipitated to the bottom of theshaft, a distance of 830 yards, being literally dashed to pieces.
