THE PAINTERS' MATCH. The painters of this city played their annual match at Hagley Park yesterday afternoon. Sides were chosen by Messrs Samuels and Wood. The latter had 12 men and the former 11. Mr Samuel's side batted first, and made 75. It was arranged that if a man was not out after being in 15 minuteß, he should retire. Curtain and Gapes, members of the Midland Club, were top pcorers with 26 and 19. Downs played well for 18. Mr Wood's mem scored more than their opponents, and had made 93 ' when their last wicket fell. W. Ashby, of. the Addington Club, retired after making 33. Kirk, of St Albans notoriety, contributed 22, and J. Bush, a member of the Lancaster Park Club, made 11. In Mr Samuels' team's second innings,. Gapeß again was top Bcorer, and retired with 22 to his credit. The only other double figure scorer was Downß, with 10. The total of the innings was 60, thus leaving the other side 43 to make to win. The 43 was soon got. J. Bash, with 40 (retired), was the chief run getter, and was well Beoonded by Ashby with 33. Belcher was not out with 14. The total amounted to 113, being 71 ahead of Mr Samuels' side. Gapes, Curtain, Ashby, and Kirk bowled well for their sides, though they were handicapped owing to over-arm bowling not being allowed. Refreshments were provided on the ground. We think it would cause more interest, if, in future, the Painters arranged a match with one of the other tradcß.
