« The steamer Hawea, with the San Francisco mail, arrived in Lyttelton at 8 o'clock this morning. An auction sale in the bankrupt estate of general storekeepers at Sydenham iB announced by Messrs Boss and Co. for Tuesday. The preacher at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church to-morrow will be the Eev Mr Adamson, from Ireland. The Lancaster Park's fifth meeting will take place on^onday, the first race being timed for one o'clock. The Addington band will perform on the ground. The entries for the handicaps for the North Canterbury Caledonian Society have been moat satisfactory, there being no less than 86. The handicaps will appear in an advertisement in Monday's Lyttelton Times The members of the Robert Burns Masonic Lodge are to attend the funeral of the late Mr R. M'Pherson to-morrow. Other Masonic notifications to the same effect will be found in our advertising colnmns. Oa Thursday evening last, Lieutenant Recce, of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, entertained the members of his Corps at a banquet at his residence in the Windmill road. Besides the troopers and noncommissioned officers there were also present Majors Slater and Newall, Captain, Cotton, Lieutenant Adams, Dr Irving, Surgeon to the Corps, the Eev Mr Radcliffe, the newly-appointed Chaplain, and Messrs George King and A. Cook. After the good things provided had been done ample justice to, and the usual loyal toasts disposed of, Sergeant-Major Wright, on behalf of the Corps, and in a speech worthy of the occasion, presented Major Slater with a handsome brace of pistols enclosed in a very pretty case made from New Zealand woods. The gift was made as a slight token of the regard in which the Major is held by the members of the Corps of which he has now given up command, and also in recognition of the valuable services he has rendered to it since its formation. The Major, upon rising to respond, wis enthusiastically cheered, and thanked the men for their kindness and thoughtfulness. In the course of his reply, ha dwelt at length on the value of Volunteers to a country situated as New Zealand is, and especially of a corps of sharp-shooters, snch as the Mounted Rifles, as it was that branch of the service which would be found of great use in the event of an invasion. Several other toasts were proposed during the evening, and a large amount of singing indulged in, a very enjoyable gathering being brought to a close at midnight by the singing of the National Anthem, and three cheers for Lieutenant Recce, and three more for Mrs Recce and the little Recces

A camp meeting is to be held to-morrow, : in connection with the Primitive Methodist Church, Cambridge terrace. The assembly will be in Cathedral Square at 2 o'clock, the Knightstown drum and fife ban 1 attending. ; An inquest into the death of the child Walter Stenning, who was drowned in the Avon yesterday, was held at 10 a.m. to-day, at the Star and Garter Hotel. Mr John Toovey wa3 chosen foreman of the jury. The evidence of the child's mother, and that of Samuel Parkes, the young man who took the body out of the river, was heard, and the jury then returned a verdict of accidentally drowned. !
