Society for Prevention of Cruelty.
♦■ . . A MONTH'S WORK. A meeting of the above Society was held in the offices of the Chriatchurch City Council at 4.30 p.m. yesterday ; present— Messrs John Anderson (Chairman), Slater, Mitohinson, Shaw, and Carter. Messrs Hulbert and Murphy apologised for being unable to attend. The Inspector's report as follows was read: — " During the month, in addition to my round of the City, auburbs, and markets, I have been to Lyttelton and Rangiora. My attention was drawn to a number of sheep j in a small paddock without food, where they remained from Wednesday afternoon till Friday. I saw the owner, who said he had bought more, as they were cheap, than he could boil down at once, and he had no paddock with food to put them into, but they were out on Friday and Saturday feeding by the roadside. He has promised it shall not occur again, as now that the corn is carried he has plenty of feed for any he might buy. Since, he has had other lots of sheep, which are placed in good feed. I hare seen fewer lame horses this month, and assign the reason to the roads being in better repair. I am pleased to notice that poultry consigned to the ; steamers from Chriatchurch are now carried in improved cages. " J. G, MITCHINBOK, « Inspector." The following cautions had been given : —Five handling poultry carelessly ; one sheep in a paddock without food ; five working horses with wounds 1 one overcrowding small birds ; two working lame horses; one kicking a horse; one using tight turning bearing reinß ; twenty horses inspected showing Bymptomß of wounds, lameness, &c; one tried to find owner of wounded dog.
