liANOASTER PARK AS A MODEL. ACCIDENT ON THE MANAWATU LINE. SLANDER. WELLINGTON, March 10. The 'people who bought the Manawatu Railway Company's land up the West Coast this week are getting up an agitation to have the block proclaimed a road district. This iB, of course, to Becure the expenditure of rates they will now have to pay in their own locality for their own benefit, instead of upon other people's property, the present railway reaching the dihO ict. A little girl named Judd broke her arm at the Hutt school in rather an unusual way. Since the execution of the Great Barrier murderers the children have been playing at " Caffrey and Perm," by standing on a stump, reaching up to the branch of a tree, and then letting themselves drop the full length of their arms. While Judd was doing tbia her arm slipped, and she fell to the ground, breaking her arm. The Doric is to come here iustead of to Port Chalmers from Hobart next week. Ib is intended to form a Company here to make a recreation ground in Thorndon, on the model of the Lancaster Park in Ohristohurch, if the land can be obtained from the Manawatu Railway Company, -whose reclamation is the only available place. Five acres will be bought if the price is reasonable. It has leaked out that nn aocident occurred lately at the Manawatu Railway Station, an engine running into and -smashing up several trucks. The damage 4b said to amount to JBISO. lieutenant-Colonel Roberts has been -appointed Commandant of the Permanent Militia. There were no less than 131 civil cases at the R.M. Court to-day, 72 being Bummonsea for rates. The University Senate closed the session this afternoon, the business being formal. At the City Council to-night the sum of J825 was granted to the Wainui Waterworks Enquiry Committee, for the purpoße of obtaining* evidence (expert or otherwise) on the workß. During the discussion ui> the question Councillor Petheriok takl that during the construction of the reservoir Councillors bad taken money from the Council and pub it in their own poikets, and further, that he had laid an information against them at the time, but the matter dropped through the death of the solicitor who had charge of the cases. Councillor Quick said this was a Blander on the Council, and moved to go into Committee. On resuming, a vote of censure was passed on Councillor Pe the nek. The Council deoided to assist in forming the proposed Municipal Corporation Association.
