Yesterday evening a cheque on the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, for JBl, signed by Mr M. Campbell, of North Canterbury, was lost under somewhat suspicious circumstances. Mr Campbell, who was on a visit to Cbristchurch, had tea at the Zetland Arms Hotel, and being short of change asked the landlord ■(Mr Walker) for a blank cheque. Mr Walker produced his cheque book of the Union Bank. One of the cheques, No. A 140292, was altered to the Colonial Bank, Rangiora. Mr Campbell filled it up for the sum of JBl, and cashed it. The cheque was not taken out of the book, which was laid on a table in one of the rooms of the hotel. Some little time afterwards the book was found with the cheque -torn out. Payment of it haa been stopped.
