VOLUNTEERS BEWARE! CASE UNDER THE DEFENCE ACT. WELLINGTON, Dec. 14. The New Zealand Cross will be presented to Lieutenant M'Donnell to-morrow at the Parliamentary Buildings The first case under the Defence Actof 1886, in this city, ia now in course of progress against, a private in the local company. By Section 47, and following sections of this Act. the Officer Commanding the Volunteer Company is empowered ta inflict fines for certain offences, and on nonpayment of same to report the caie tothe Commanding Officer of the district ; the fine still remaining unpaid, notwithstanding the order to that effect, the papers, including the order, are cent to the Clerk of the BeDch, who records an order which has there and then, without further judicial procedure, the same effect as if a conviction had heen recorded, and adistress warrant issued for the recovery of fine and costs.
