STRUCK BY LIGHTNING.
The steamer Ohau, on a recent trip to Groymouth from Wellington, had a rourfi experience. As we all know" (akystheGrey Si^r Argus), "it was very heavy weather outside dnrin 8 the past few days ; but thaOhan had an experience that does not occur everyday. During the terrible burst of weather on Thursday night and Friday morning the Ohau was struck by lightning. The flash was accompaniedby an explosion of great violence. It alarmed Sreryone on board, and the majority rushed up on deer, apparently under the impression that the boiler had turst. After the alarm subsided, .and the master took a look round to see whether there waa any damage dose, it was foundthat the after ■teering compass waa about tenpoinM out, and it was thought that it had been demagnetujed altogether, 'lhe lightning conductors were burnt off at the maathead, while a piece of the steel mast was fused, and presented the appearance of having been burned away in a furnace. Tho truck of the mast waa split in two, one pieoe being picked up forward and the other piece going aft. The signal halyards disappeared altogether, not a trace being left, and whether thoy wore were burned by the lightning flash or blown away altogether it was impossible to say."
