• • The ordinary fortnightly meeting was held on Tuesday night; present —the Mayor, and Councillors Simpson, Oram, Humphreys, May, Brighting, Hicks and Blakely. The Mayor announced the appointment of Mr J. Webßter to the office of Town Clerk, and the neoeseary alterations in the schedule of duties. Routine correspondence was read, and a letter was received from the Secretary of the Fire Brigade, asking the Council for £20 as a donation towards their annual demonstration. Request declined. Councillor Oram reported for the Works Committee that the bridge had been recently opened and closed successfully. The officers of the Volunteer Company had asted to have the hollow in Hilton street, in front of their new drillshed, filled np. The concrete drain in Sewell street is progressing favourably. On the motion of Councillor Humphreya, seconded by Coud- . cillor Simpßcn, the report was adopted. Councillor Oram reported that the various property owners on Carew's land were wii ling to contribute towards the expense of a drain. The Council resolved that tho work should he put in hand. Councillor Blakely reported, for the Finance Committee, that the receipts for the past fortnight were—states, __£!; dog tax, £Q i transfer license fees, £2; weights and measures, lid; total, JE9 Oa lid; Bank overdraft, JJ9I7 1-Oa 8d; and recommended payment of accounts amounting to £41 (Ss lid. .The report was adopted. ' Councillor Simpson reported for the Sanitary Committee that a householde in Jones street had a nuisance. His attention had been called to it by neighbours. The matter was left in the hands of the Sanitary Committee to deal with. ; The letter from the Charitable Aid ' Department was read by tho Mayor, who explained the proposed alterations. After some discussion it was resolved —"That the consideration of clauses 1 and 2 be deferred for 12 months, but that this Council approve of clauses 3, 4, and 5." After considering the letter from Mr J. Wilson, Councillor Oram proposed, and Councillor May seconded —"That pending some expected legislation, the matter be deferred far a fortnight."
