THE DRAINAGE ACT.
| A public meeting was held at St Albans Wesleyan schoolroom last evening, to protest against the proposed alteration of the Drainage Act. Notwithstanding the bad weather, there was a large and representative attendance. His Worship the Mayor of St Albans occupied the chair. The Chairman read the advertisement calling tbe meeting, and explained at length the object of the meeting, which, he eaid, was to obtain an expression of opinion from the ratepayers of the district as to the advisability or otherwise of opposing the proposed amendments to "The Christchurch District Drainage Act, 1875," which are now before the Houße of Representatives. It was proposed by Mr Kelly, and seconded by Mr W. A. Brown —" That this meeting protests against -the proposed inoreased rating power sought to be obtained by the Christchurch District Drainage Board in the Bill to amend the ' Christchurch Drainage Act, 1875,' now before the House of Representatives." The proposer and seconder spoke at some '■ length in support of the resolution, deprecating the giving of any further power to the Board, even though some of the members declared that they would never exer- ', cise the power. i The motion was carried unanimously. J It was moved by. Mr John Rountree, and ; seconded by Mr Salter—" That His Worship the Mayor be requested to telegraph copies of this resolution to Sir Julius Vogel, Messrs Garrick, Holmes, and Eeese, : at the same time urging upon them to strenuously oppose the pasaingi of the , BUI." j The speeches in favour of the resolution were short and to the point. The resolution was carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed -the meeting.
