The Locomotive Contract.

PROGRESS OF THE WOEK. Messrs Scott Bros, are making good progress with their locomotive contract. The ten engines are all in hand ; a considerable portion of the brass- work for each is completed, as are also the boiler-shell rings ; and the welding of the domes has been satisfactorily finished. Half of the steamcylinders havo been cast, aad most of the machine work — planiug, boring, ite, connected with them has been done. The greater part of the work of the valve gears is completed. Several of the large foundation castings— forcarrying the front of the boiler over the bogie— are finished. All the aide frames have been planed, and a special machine for slotting them has just been Bet running. The side tanks and coal bunkers are well under way, several of them being finished.. At the Lyttelton workshops the sorap furnace and the large steam hammers have been got to work, and a commencement has been made with the scrap-forginga for the connecting rods, .side rods, and wheels, Ac. A great deal of work in connection with the minor details has been don*e." All the appliances in the shops, both at Christchurch and Lyttelton, are engaged to their full capacity, and several new machines, lathes, shaping and brassfinishing machines, a bolt and rivetmaking machine, a saw for cutting iron, and other appliances have been added to the previously existing plant.
