■*> An ordinary meeting of the City Council will be held this evening at 7 o'clock. The Police have received a telegram from Dunedin, stating that a man named James Shearer has been arrested in that city on a charge of robbery, committed in Christchurch. He is accused of stealing a watch and .£l2 from a man named Arthur Millar. Yesterday afternoon and evening come members of the police force were busy paying surprise vißits to various hotels in the city and suburbs. What the result of the inspection is will probably appear on Thursday next, when the information cases are heard at the Resident Magistrate's Court. On Friday evening last a concert was given in the Masonic Hall, Ashburton, under . the auspioes of the Somerset Lodge of Freemasons. There was a large attendance, and an excellent musical programme was run through. Chief among the items was the admirable violin playing of Messrs Wood, of Timaru, and Herman, Christchurch, and the vocal numbers by local amateurs were well rendered. During the interval, tea and coffee were handed round to the ladies in the audience, and generally a very happy evening was spent.
