AUCKLAND, Joke 12. • Burt, surveyor, has been found safe, having got through to Galatea. The bodies of Haszard and children have been recovered. The inquest i 8 proceeding. An , old Maori dug his way out of a whare after ; being buried for hours. Numbers of cattle I and horses have already died for ; want of feed. Sophie, the well-known 1 Maori guide, when interviewed, said he i had distributed the clothing in his store to one of the Natives who had escaped almost naked. She lost two wooden houses and a store at Wairoa. The whare" where she lived is the only dwelling left standing in a once prosperous settlement, and iB half buried in mud. She wept copiously, and said that " Wairoa wasgone." She could tell notbing definite about the fate of Te Arika and Morea settlements, j but said there was little hope that they ; were saved.
