The Cargo.

The car^e of the Lyttelton consisted j mainly of frozen mutton from the South i Canterbury Refrigerating Works at Wai- ' maitaitai. The insurances were di viced . among several offices: the New Zealand and the National had risks amounting to .£3OOO each. The vessel had been partly loaded in Dunedic, and her cargo from that port consisted of 96G bags of oats, 840 bags of flour, 647 bales of wool, 40 bales of rabbit akins, 9 bales of sheepskins, 23 casks of tallow, 68 casks of oil, 34 tins of boiler composition, 21 quarter-casks and 19 cases of whiskey. From Timaru she took 9084 carcases of frozen meat and 400 tons of coal, the latter for her own consumption. The hull of the vessel is believed to be insured in London. The Union Insurance Company has £2000 on her cargo. The Lyttelton was an iron ship, of 1180 tons gross register. She was 223 ft Bin long, Soft broad, and of 21ft depth of hold. She was built at Glasgow in 1878 by E. Duncan. She waa owned by the Shaw, Bavill and Albion Co., and was classed 100 Al. She waa last surveyed in January, 1885. She was commanded by Captain H. W. Boonnan, formerly chief offioer of the Lady Jocelyn.
