Private letters received from the West Coast show that the peoplo on that side are fully as sanguine as those of Canterbury in regard to the benefits anticipated from the making of the Weßt Coast and Nelson Baiiway, which they hopo will deliver them from the evils of isolation and high prices at present afflicting some of the district**. A gentleman, writing from the Beefton district says : — " It looks as if Beefton will be a place of importance soon. In fact, it can hardly be otherwise. The district ia rich in minerals, but languishing for want of communication with the centres o£ population. Fancy the prices of provisions here — a shilling for a four-pound lo\f» aid 5s per bushel for oats."
