THE WEST COAST RAILWAY.

The Proposed Demonstration. His Worship the Mayor of Christchurch ia already taking the initiative in preparing for a demonstration such as shall be worthy of the occasion. The formal completion of the contract with the London Syndicate, it is universally felt, is essentially a matter for pnblio rejoicing, and ia, moreover, a " white stone " day in the history of the Colony. Of course as yet the matter haß not assumed any definite shape. The Mayor, we believe, will bring the Bubject forward at to-night's meeting of the City Council, and subsequently a considerable number of the leading citizens will be invited to meet together and form themselves into a representative Committee. That everyone will be hearty in preparing for thiß demonstration we are confident. We are satisfied also that no pains will be spared to make it the moßt memorable holiday Canterbury has ever known. Already a number of gentlemen have forwarded to his Worship subscriptions towards the demonstration fund. It need scarcely be added that for the purpose in view, a large and well- filled Bubscriptionlist will be a necessity, and that contributions thereto may be either in money or in kind. The Mayor feels in this matter that he giveß twice who gives quickly.
