It is authoritatively stated that the French Government have resolved not to send further batches of recidivistes to NewCaledonia for the present. The statement that it waß the intention shortly to send 1000 convicts to New Caledonia is declared to be unfounded. Apeii. 20. Dr Moorhouse arrived in London, yesterday. The proposals of Mr Gladstone for the establishment of an Irish Parliament are viewed with strong disfavour in the northern Counties of Ireland, where much, bitterness of feeling prevails in connection with the scheme. A movement has been started for raising a fund to be expended in furnishing loyalists or Protestant Irish, with equipments of war, that they may be prepared for any eventuality. April 21. JMr Gladstone has written a letter to the Quebec Legislative Assembly, expressing thanks for the action of that Chamber in passing a resolution approving of the Home Rule policy. The shipment of Victorian fruits, con', Bisting of apples, pears, and grapes, sent by the steamer John Elder on March 5, has been unpacked and inspected. The apples and pears were in good condition, but the bulk of the grapes were quite unfit for use. Lord Tennyson haa written an inaugural ode to be delivered at the opening ceremony at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition. News haa been received of a hostile encounter between the Greek and Turkish outposts on the frontier of Thessaly. The Turks were repulsed. The Government of Greece have repudiated the action of the Grecian commanders, who are held to be responsible for the outbreak. April 23. The sending of an ultimatum from the Great Powers to Greece has been delayed owing to the Russian Government not having yet given their assent. Dr Moorhouse has been interviewed by a representative of the Pall Mall Gazette. In the course of the interview Dr Moorhouse spoke in eulogistic terms of the Colony, and people of Victoria. Acting under instructions from the Sydney City Council, Sir Saul Samuel haa accepted the tender of Hill and Sons, of London, for the erection of an organ in the Centennial Hall, at a cost of .£12,950. Total co3t, including freight and maintenance for twelve months, &c, will be £14,241. Hill and Sons were the builders of the organ ia the Town Hall, Melbourne. The Right Hon J. Chamberlain, addressing nis constituents at Birmingham last evening, stated that whilst he was opposed to the Irish Land Purchase scheme of the Government, he would support a modified system of Home Rule, which Bhould provide that a certain proportion of Irishmen might continue flit in the Imperial Commons, and that two Parliaments should be established in Ireland, one to represent the South, and the other to sit in Ulster and represent the Protestant population. In connection with the land pirchaee scheme submitted to the House of Commons, it is provided that in caseß where the Irish tenants cf any estate refuse to take advantage of the facilities proposed to be given them for purchasing their farms, the State will assume the ownership. The Valletta, which left London for Australia on April 8, has gone aground in the Suez Canal. The cargo is being unloaded, in order to lighten the vessel. App.il 25. Viscount Sherbrooke has announced that he is opposed to the Irish policy of the Gladstone Government. Messrs Gardiner and Company have written a letter to the Times, complaining of the Bystem ef boycotting practised by an English shipping ring against firms which ship cargo to Australian ports by the vessels of the opposition Company, Tyser and Company. Messrs Gardiner remark tbat the maintenance of high freight and charges demanded by members of the ring iB a question of national concern, inasmuch as the effect of excessive charges mnst be to drive trade into the hands of a few. They, therefore, suggest that Parliament Bhould interfere to prevent the ring from pursuing their present tactics.
