At the annual banquet of the Eoyal Academy the Prince of Wales, in hi« address, praised the fine portrait of Lord Carrington by Mr Frank Hall, E.A. He also dwelt with emphasis on the splendid character of tht paintings at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition. The Visitors Reception Committee of the ludian and Colonial Exhibition are organising a series of excursions. Sir Charles Gavan Duffy, writing t» the Contemporary Review, argues that Colonial iiualogies justify Mr Gladstone in his i-ftorts to grant Horn« Eule to Ireland. Lord Hartington and Mr Goschen have held successful political meetiug* in Edinburgh and several other Scottish towns. Mr John Morley has thrown out hints tbat important modifications will be made in Mr Gladstone's Irish proposals. Moukhtar Pasha declines to modify his proposals regarding the Egyptia» army.
