Sydenham Election.
-+■ Mr S. P. Andrews met the electors last evening at the Selwyn Street Schoolroom. Thero were about two hundred persons present. Councillor N. K. Bowden took the chair, and requested for Mr Andrews an attentive and orderly meeting. Mr Andrews then spoke of the causes that induced him to come forward, and complained of the acknowledged inability of each successive Ministry to cope with the question of the settlement of the people on the land. He referred to the necessity for something more decided being done by this Government to make the lands more productive, and the failures of the several Governments to lead the people hitherto. He spoke in high terms of praise of Sir Julius Vogel's late speech at Wellington. After speaking on the education system,
which Mr Andrews warmly supported, he sat down amid considerable applause. Several questions having been put and answered, Mr Winter moved, and Mr Whiting seconded, " a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Andrews for his address that night, and for the information given," which was put and carried unanimously. A vote of thanka to the Chairman terminated the meeting.
