Wedding: Presents in Money.
A GROWING CUSTOM. Some remark has boon made that among Mwa Glad3 tone's wedding presents were several cheques. Lord Rosebery, Sir Charles Tennant, Mr Henry Gladstone, PiAndrew Clarke, each gave .£IOO, and Lady Frederick Cavendish, Mr Holden, M.P., Mr Herbert Gladstone, and others each £50. But this, a London contemporary remarks, is not absolutely a new fashion. At the marriago of Miss Cavendish Bentinck a few weeks ago, her cousin, the Duke of Portland, presented her with a cheque for a very largo sum. Again Lady Mary Primrose, on her marriage with Mr Hope in the autumn, received gifts in the shape of thousand pound cheques, both from her brother Earl Rosobery, and her step- father, the Duke of Cleveland. In knmUer social oirclea the practice is growing in favour, and a five pound note is
, certainly the most appropriate of marriage presents. It is certainly a very sensible fashion to set. As a rule brides and bride- ; i grooms receive from their well-meaning ' . friends all sorts of coßtly things for which j they have no earthly übo. Or perhaps • • they are given eeveral articles of the same j kind. Many and many are the brides ' embarrassed with biscuit boxes. Whereas, ' if their friends would but give them money, the young folk would have the pleasure of j spending it in the purchase of articles that [ are most suitable to their requirements. j
