CANTERBURY ROWING CLUB,

The members of the C/R.C. wound up a successful season on Saturday afternoon with a series of scratch four-oar races. Owing to the opening of the football season and a Volunteer encampment at Quail Island, there were not so many entries as had been anticipated. Five crews, however, came to the post, and some splendid races resulted, the close finishing causing great excitement. The heata were as follows : — «RBT HEAT. C. Stronte, E. C. Uich, A. L. Bazrd, E. 31. Boalton (stroke) 1 W. Boulton, H. E. Eicb, N. L. Macbeth, A. Laurie (stroke) 2 This was the only heat which was won with anything to spare. Boulton's crew took the lead soon after the start. Won by a little over a length. SECOND HEAT. Pimsonby, Hawkea, Parson. Dunnage (stroke) 1 Cross, Hobbs, Dunaford, Colebrook (stroke) ... 2 The boats kept level till 200 yards from home, when Dunnage drew ahead and won a good race by half a length. THIRD lIEAT. Strouts, Bich, Baird, Boulton (stroke) 1 Rich, Cross, Buokland, Smith (stroke) 2 Smith, to make up a crew, took in two men who had rowed in the previous heat, and the result was as fine a race as has been seen on the Avon. Both boats went away at a hot pace, Boulton leading by » few feet till the bridge was reached, when Smith's crew cauie up, and the two boats

rowed level for a short distance, when a a slight bend gave Smith a lead of a couple of yards. This he kept until 30 yards from home, when Bold ton, with a final effort, shot up and gained the judge's verdict bj a foot. The two boats kept on perfectly even terms until the last 50 yards, when Boulton, with another fine effort, drew out, and won by ten feet. Next Saturday there will be a picnic at New Brighton, and an excursion down the rivor, to which all members are invited.
