Canterbury Art Society.

BESULTS OP THE EXHIBITION. The final evening of this year's Exhibition of the Canterbury Art Society came on Saturday, and the inhabitants of Christchurch will, for some eleven months and more, miss a very pleasant rtndezvcus. The Exhibition had steadily become more popular up to the very last, the takings on Saturday evening being larger than on any previous occasion. It is certainly a matter for congratulation both to the public and to the Society itself, J that the latter has sow acquired an established position. The following figures, which have kindly been supplied us by tho Secretary (Captain Garsia), to whose untiring care aad exertions a very j large measure of the Society's late success is certainly due, will 3how better than anything the progress made in all things, but especially in finfmcial matters, during the pa*fc two years. In the first placo, the popularity of the Exhibition appears to have nearly doubled, lor last year there were 3738 visitors, while this time 2G05 paid for admission i during the three weeks the gallery was j open, Membership has Also, increased from

109 in the former year to 175 in the latter, while, in Bpite of the number of worts Bent Home to the Indian and Colonial Ertribi" j tion, the pictures— with 30 rejected— numbered 176 against 171. The honorary mem- j here who pay no subscriptions, but must be working members of kindred societies, and I who exhibited no works last year, sent five i this time. The little orchestra, under Mr Corrick's ' leadership, who have often made the even- \ ings at the Exhibition so enjoyable, per- ' formed for the last time on Saturday evening and the place was crowded, more than 300 people being present. The Garrison Band also played selections outside the building between 7 and 8 o'clock. Before bidding farewell to the subject, it is necessary to correct a Blight error which occurred in our account of the arrangeinentß made regarding the permanent exhibition at Messrs Simpson and Williams' room. Artists will not "be inyited to exhibit pictures there for sale " indiscriminately. This will only be done in the case of works which have been exhibited under the auspices of the Society. It is as well to remind purchasers and otherß that their belongings must be removed this day.
