This Day. I (Before John Ollivier, Esq., R.M.) : Drunkenness. — Stephen Young was I charged with drunkenness and creating a ' disturbance in a licensed house. The Bench took a lenient view of the case, and , fined the man ss. ! Lakcenies. — "Walter Bardsley -was charged with stealing an umbrella, value 10s 6d, the property of the Rev J. Townsend. Ellen Vincent said the man called at the parsonage yesterday at about 1 p.m. He asked to see the mistress, and on receiving the reply that she was out, said he would call again. The door was left open. Frank Haxall said the man called ■ at his father's hotel and wanted an ad- : vance on the umbrella, as he said he : wanted to go to Christchurch. Lent , him Is 6d. Mr Townsend asked that the i case should not be pressed. Sergeanti Major Mason said the man had been drink--1 ing. The Bench cautioned the accused ; severely, and sent him to gaol for seven i days' hard labour. — Herbert M f Bride was i charged with stealing a silver watch, I value £o } a gold chain, and some ; wearing apparel, total value under J5lO. Accused pleaded guilty to the charge. Sergeant-Major Mason said it waa ! a disgraceful case. Accused was an ap- | prentice on board the barque Thome, and • at 3 a.m. on March 6 he cleared out, taking j with him the articles named, which were j the property of another apprentice on i board the barque. The b Q rque sailed just | hefore the boy was arrested. The officers j of the Thome gave the boy a bad charac- \ ter. Accused pleaded hard for a chance. j The Bench administered a severe caution, and ordered accused to be sent to gaol for ; thice months. | Desebted Children. — Etta Nolan, aged ■ eight years, and John Nolan, three years, \ were again brought before the Court | charged with being deserted children. Sergeant-Major Mason said the children ; had been brought before the Court before, ! when the Bench refused to make an order :of committal. Charitable aid had been allowed their mother, but had been stopped ion account of her misconduct. The mother ; was called, and the Bench informed her that in the event of her being brought . before the Court for any misconduct she . would be severely dealt with. The children . would be sent to the St Mary's Catholic j Industrial School till they reached the age 1 of fifteen years.
