APPEAL AGAINST ASSESSMENT.

THIS DAT. Meesrs C. Wbitefoord, W. White, Jan., and G. L. Lee, the Commissioners appointed to try the appeal of the Amuri County Council against the rate levied in respect of their District by the Hospital and Charitable Board, sat at 10 o'clock this morning, at the Resident Magistrate's Court, for the purpose of announcing their decision. Mr Holmes was present on behalf of the Charitable Aid Boatd. Mr Whitefoord said that the Commissioners had come to the conclusion unanimously that the resolution passed by the Board should be confirmed. Of course they only gave their opinion now as a matter of courtesy to the parties, as their duty was to report their decision to the Colonial Secretary. The Commissioners held that the rateable value of property was the proper basis upon which to strike the rate throughout the district, and would confirm the order made by the Board in allocating the ratce to the Amuri County CounciL The rate had been struck upon a proper basis, and the Amuri County Council would be ordered to pay the amount demanded. The Commissioners would report accordingly to the Colonial Secretary. He was not aware that they had any power to award costß. Mr Holmes feared there wag no such power given in the Act. This concluded the proceedings. Mr Joynt had not been aware of the hour when the decision would be announced, and this accounted for his absence.
