CHEIST'S COLLEGE EIFLE COEP3. The weekly " spoon " match in connection with the above Corps took place yesterday morning at the Hillsborough range, and resulted in a well-deserved win for Sergeant Smith, who has been very persistent in his attendance at the practices. These matches appear to be becoming very popular with the members of the Corps, no leas than twenty-three men putting in an appearance at 4.30 a.m. yesterday. The shooting, however, was not as good as it might have been, owing, perhaps, to the bad light. The ranges fired at were 200 yds, 400 yds, and 500 yds. The following are the scores .- —
The Ashburton Eifleß, to the number of 50, including the band, paraded on Sunday morning for church. All the officers and non-commisßioned officers were present, and the corps, when the men fell in at the post office, presented quite a smart appearance. The Company marched to the Presbyterian Church, in which the service was conducted by the Eev A. M. Beattie, M.A., who preached a sermon special to the occasion on "The whole armour of God." The psalms and hymns were also suitably chosen, and the choir was reinforced, on the invitation of Miss Kidd, the able organist, by several of the members of the corps. On returning to the post office, the names of the men willing to attend the battalion parade at Timaru on March 25 were taken, and over twenty of those present signified their intention of attending. The men were then dis, missed. Immediately after the parade the band marched off to head tne funeral procession of the late Joseph Hyde, who, for many years previous to bis death, had been a member of the band. The funewil was very largely attended, ' and the band, playing the " Dead March | in Saul," led the procession to tho graveyard. j Owiug to tho resignation of Captain C. W. Purnell, from ill-health, and of Lieutenants Clayton and Gundry, who have removed from Ashburton, tho Ash- ! burton Guards have been left without a ; commissioned officer. They have elected a : Captain in the person of Mr Northey, of 1 Graham's road — a gentleman who has already held Her Majesty's commission — 1 and a new era of prosperity for the corps is augured from the appointment. The ' other vacancies will be filled by-and-bye.
