Serious Fire near Waikari.
FOUR THOUSAND SHEEP DESTEOYED. WAIKARI, Pbb. 2=7. A fire, supposed to be caused by a railway engine, commenced on Mr Moore's farm, between Ha warden and Medbury stations, this morning. It swept over Bix miles of country, including Mr F. Perriott'B farm, and crossed the North road two miles. It destroyed .000 of Mr Moore's sheep, or_« mile of railway fence, three miles of telegraph poles, all Mr Perriott's fences and his stack of grass seed. Mr Johnstone's stacks wero saved by ploughing round them.
The telegraph officials received information thia morning that large tussock fires were burning at Hurunui and Waikari, and that some of the poles on the line from Amberley to Culverden were in danger. The lineman at Amberley was instructed to ascertain whether any serious, damage had been done to the wires. It would appear, however, that this ie not the case, as the line is not interrupted.
