When a woman is in earnest she is not to be outdone. A Philadelphia!! lately sent a postal card to his sister in Canada, on which he had written 614 words. She answered with 714. Not to be beaten, he crowded in 1003, which brought an answer with 1526 words spelled out in full, and written plain enough to be easily read by persons of ordinarily good eight. The brother has written saying he thinks ho had better send hie sister "a new spring bonnet, and call it square." He had better send the bonnet, remarks a critic, as he will never be able to get as . many words, or have the last w ord with a woman,, even on a postal card. In 1883 there were 974,759 paupers upon the books of Parish Unions; altogether 3,400,000 persons came upon the books ; 103,355 persons were confined as lunaticß 5 and 273,560 people were committed to prison for crime. The American Colony in Paris numbers about 3000 people, but the shopkeepers Bay it is worth more to the trade o£ the French capital than its 30,000 Germans and 28,000 Italians combined. According to official statistics the principal exports in the Colonial trade of Germany consist of "brandy and gunpowder." France exports annually about ninety million pounds of butter, valued at 17,300,0C0d01.
