Christchurch Amateur Swimming Club.

THE ANNUAL CONTEST. The clerk of the weather certainly displays great leniency towards the members of the above Club, whose annual gathering took place on Saturday, which, meteorologically speaking, was no exception to the rule. During the morning heavy clouds obscured the sky, and just before the commencement of the programme a few drops of rain caused the ladies present to open their umbrellas ; but, as if to cheat the fair sex, old Sol showed his radiant face between the clouds, completely dispersing them, and rendering the afternoon, except to the natatory portion of the assemblage, if anything rather too warm to bo comfortable. Captain Francis, courteous and energetic as ever, was here, there and everywhere, and the various officers of the Club worked hard, under somewhat adverse circumstances, to make the meeting what it undoubtedly was — au unqualified success. The Captain of the Club, as usual, occupied the post of starter, Mr E. A. England acted as timekeeper, and iiessrs L. Harper, M.H.R., C. P. Hulbert, and Dr Hacon were the judges. The attendance of the public was, as it always is, extremely good, and numbers of small specimens of the genus homo swarmed on the roofs of the bath. Proceedings commenced at half-past two, and the various events were got off with commendable punctuality. The Dunedin representative was unfortunately absent. A. Dallas, the winner of the cup, deserves great credit for tho plucky and determined manner in which he swam, and his success was greeted with well-merited applause. _he following are the results : — 50yds Handicap. The above quartette breasted the water well together, Dallas and Booth touching the top and bottom of the bath almost simultaneously. Sinclair, the Lyttelton representative, dropped out after two lengths had been traversed. A good finish eventuated between numbers one and three, Dallas coming in first. Booth inadvertently eased off, allowing Spencer to touch the winning-post before him, and thus obtain second place. Time — 79sec. Plnuging Competition. First prize, silver modal.
