He was present at the Young Hen's Christian Association's picnic at M'Nab's gardens, and wa_ photographed amongst a large group of persons on that occasion, having been requested to join in by a person who had met him at the Bed Light Boarding-house. He consented, probably with the view of warding off any suspicions. Detective Campbell was informed by a person who saw Howard coming off the steamer Penguin at the Queen's wharf on Sunday, Dec. 20, that the accused stated J.e had been to Christchurch.
