UPPER SELWYN.

Towards the clo:.e of the year that is now dead and gone, a number of gentlemen of the Upper Selwyn district met to con-

-3 ; sider the propriety of providing a treat foi * ! the children and young here. They de- } : cided to canvass for a supply of the r | " sinews of war," and the residents liber- } ally supported them. A convenient pad- * dock having been kindly granted by Mr j i Brown, and the required funds obtained, , all other necessary arrangements were made , for holding the sport*? on the first day of * the present year. The public signified ■ their approval by attending in hundreds, and the fact that there were people from a ■ distance seemed to indicate that the Selwyn i sports were getting famous. The honorary ; officials were on the ground about noon, and , soon thereafter might be seen " the young j contending as the old surveyed." The i programme of sports showed a list of about twenty-five events, and occupied the time till 5 o'clock, when young and old retired to partake of tea where it had been prepared. The room was tastefully decorated with flowers and evergreens, and charming young Is dies graced the table heads, suggesting reflections like that of the " Laird o' Cockpen," when he thought 1 of " Mistress Jean," of Claverseha' Lea. I When tea was over, outdoor amusements' J were renewed and continued for some time, while the tables were removed and prepara- , tions made for the dance and the song. Altogether it was an enjoyable day, with hardly a hitch to mar its pleasure. The ball was prolonged, and carriages were not ordered till an early hour in the morning. Old and young appeared very well satis i fied, and no doubt will be pleasing themselves with anticipations of witnessing : another such happy day, and wishing long I life and health to those ladies and gentlej men who so heartily laboured in making the day a success and pleasure.
