TIMARU.
The weather was delightfully fine, there being bright sunshine with a pleasant breeze ; and a close holiday was observed. The town was almost entirely deserted, and every nook and corner of tho suburbs where people could resort for a pleasant ! outing, was rushed with picnic parties. j Public and private conveyances were about ; at an early hour, conveying pleasure par- ! ties to and fro. A monster picnic in con- ! nection with the Roman Catholic schools ; attracted some 500 or 600 people, inoluding j children, who left town by special train at j 8.50 a.m. for the " camping ground" at • Winchester; and a joyous procession of • Salvationist holiday makers, with band and banners, marched out of town to spend a day in the country. The Timaru Racing Club's meeting also attracted a number of people, and altogether the day was very i generally enjoyed.
