SATURDAY'S RACES. On Saturday afternoon the Canterbury Rowing Club open their racing season, and when we Bay that it Ib proposed to row off three sets of raceß, and that the aspirants for aquatic fame give the respectable total of thirty, it will hardly be necessary to add that some interesting racing may confidently be expected. First on the list will be rowed THE PRESIDENT'S CUP, for which the following crews have entered : — FIBST HEAT. A. Johnston, how ( W. T. Edgar, how W. C. Laurie, 2 ( T 1 C. Colehrook, 3 E. M. Boulton, 3 (T " 1 S. E. Wright, 3 W. M. Joynt, str J V.J. F. Grieraon, str SECOND HEAT. F. B. Dunsford, how -\ (A. C. Nottingham, how A. H. Ely th, 2 ( JR. K. Spencer, 2 M. H. Lean, 1 fT l E. J. Hogg, 3 A. L. Smith, Btr J U?. A. Laurie, str This Bhould prove a spirited contest, for it ia long since so even an arrangement of crews aB the above indicates haa been effected for river matches, and although the knowing ones are inclined to Bingle out Smith and Grierson as tho most likely to do battle in the final heat, it would not be a great surprise to see one or both placed hors de combat in the first encounter. Next come THE TRIAL PAIRS, with the following good array of competitors : — FIBST HEAT. F. E. Greenatreet > _ f A. L. Baird W. B. Lingard J IS. Muter SECOND HBAT. C.T.Stewart ")„ fF.G.Kimbell B. C. Rich 3 'IJ. S. Hawkes f C. Johnson ") (.F.W.Ponsonby3 For this race Greenstret and Lingard are considered to have the beat chance, but Stewart and Rich, or Johnson and Ponsonby may cause those who fanoy the first.nauied crew to imagine that their confidence ia not altogether deserved. THE JUNIOR SCULLS (HANDICAP) will end the afternoon's sport, the entries and positions of the men being as follows : F. vv. Dunnage scratch N.L Macheth 3 lengths H. B. Rich ..; 3 lengtha F. Parson 8 lengtha It will be remembered that Dunnage carried off both the Junior and Senior Sculls last year, and we fancy he will be the first to reach the winning post on Saturday, although both Macbeth and Rich are good youngsters, and as the race is only three-quarters of a mile one of them may wrest the laurels from the juvenile champion, but it is not very likely.
