PRESENTATION.

* . An interesting ceremony took place yesterday at the Grosvenor Hotel, Tiruaru. Mr J. Goodall, M.1.C.E., who leaves for Napier to-day, was presented with a magnificent salver of solid silver and a purse of sovereigns from the residents of the district. The plate bore the following inscription : — " Presented to J. Goodall, Esq., M.1.C.E., Engineer for the Timaru Harbour Board, by the public of South Canterbury, in recognition of his skill in designing and carrying out the Tiuiarn breakwater, and of his many estimable personal qualities, with a purse of Bovereigns." Mr Moody, Chairman of the Harbour Board, made the presentation, addressing the recipient in feeling and graceful terms, and wishing him the same measure of success in his new sphere as had attended him in Timaru. Mr Goodall's health was drunk with musical honours ; and in reply that gentleman expressed his satisfaction and pride at the success of the work, and his gratitude for the confidence which South Canterbury had reposed in him. He thought the success of a solid structure in arresting the travelling shingle, as now evidenced by the state of the Timaru harbour, was worthy of special mention. While removing from Timaru as a citizen, he was proud to say he should remain Consulting Engineer to the Board, and should renew his acquaintance with old friends every four months. His thanks for the manifestations of regard were too J deep for utterance. After further ex- I pressions of goodwill, the party separated, everyone wishing Mr Goodall a hearty farewell. His departure is regretted by all who have been acquainted with him, his mental and professional qualifications, not less than his modest and unassuming manner, having won the respect of all who i know him. i
