+ The E.M.S. Kaikoura has arrived at Wellington. Details will be found in our shipping column. A gang of forty men was put on to work as a night shift at tlie batteries for th« defence of Lyttelton last night. Major Cautley is expected to arrive shortly. An inspection parade of the Headquarters Volunteer corps will take place in Hagley Park this evening. The men will muster at the College bridge at half-past; seven o'clock. The tender for the new hotel at South Eakaia to be erected by Mr J. Wallace in. place of the building burned down some weeks ago, has been let to Mr J. Fergussou, of Sydenhain, who will commence work on Saturday. A meeting of the J> ttslton Land Artillery Corps is called hf advertisement for: this evening at the O'olonists' Hall, at 8 p.m. Business : Election of officers and other important work. Members are requested to attend. Nearly fifty men arc now sworn in for the corps, and a number, of papers are given out every day. At the Kaiapoi Church of England Sunday school an entertainment was given last evening by the children, assisted by parents and friends. The programme, a large and varied one, was carried out successfully by Mesdamea Brooke, Robins, May, Wise, Winterbourne, Mr Budd, and a number of children. The room was well filled. The proceeds go towards the book fund. About ft quarter to three o'clock this afternoon, the horse attached to a waggon belonging to Messrs Whitconibo and Tombs, bolted down Colombo street, through Cathedral square and the right-of-way at the back of the Post-Office. The i trap was bid ashed to pieceß against a telegraph post and wall in the yard at the buck of the public offices 5 fortunately no other damage waß done, though several narrow escapes took place. A very succoseful gathering took place last evening at the Primitive Methodist Church, Cambridge Terrace, the occasio* being the welcome of the Rev James Guy, the new pastor. A mostjexcellcnt tea was provided, the tables being presided over by Mesdames Baker, Preston, Dufou, De la More, Wood, and the Misses Fuller and 1 Ryder. Large numbers partook of th« good cheer. The tables being cleared, the after meeting commenced, Mr T. De la Mare in the chair. Interesting addresses were delivered by the Chairman, Messrs Baker, Crabtreo, Bourne, the Roy J. Guy, and several others, and at a late hour the proceedings were closed, a most onioyable evening having been passed.
