Sydenham Borough Councils
An adjourned meeting of the Sydenham 'Borough Council was held last night; present — His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Jones, Sherlock, Langdown, Gledhill, Forrester, Bowdon, Day and Comber. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read — From the Secretary to the Drainage Board, regretting inability, from want of funds, to extend the Colombo street stormwater sewer, but renewing the offer previously made to give a number of pipes sufficient to extend from Batternea to Bowen streets ; the work of laying the pipes to be carried out to the satisfaction of the Board. The matter was referred to the "Works Committee. From the Heathcote Road Board, objectiug to certain items in the account rendered, re the Boundary road. This was dealt with in the Works Committee's report. From J. Hansmarih, requesting permission to cover with a stone culvert the side channel opposite his new hotel, Lincoln road, and to fix a water trough for cattle. This was referred to the Works Committee. From Mr E. J. Lee, enclosing two nomination forms for the election of representatives to the Harbour Board on Feb. 9, and asking the Town Clerk to act as his Deputy. Councillor Forrester suggested that as the polling on Jtho loan was to bo taken on the same day, the Oddfellows' Hall should bo engaged for the loan polling. After discussion, the Council referred the matter to the Loan Committee with power to act. REPORTS. The report of the Works Committee was read as follows : — j " Your Committee beg 3to report that it j has instructed the Town Clerk to write to I the Heathcote Road Board explaining each item in the Council's account objected to i by the Board, and recommends that the ; Board be informed that unless the account be paid immediately after tho next meeting of the Board, the Council will sue for the : amount." The report was received and adopted. | The report of the Lighting Committee , vrna read as follows : — ! "The Committee recommends the removal ot ! the lamp at present at the corner of Madras and Cailyle streets, and its reerection at tV corner of Hawdon and Carlyle streets." * The report v/as received and adopted. Councillor Comber reported that the Sanitary Committee had considered Mr Cn^or^o Bull's application for a renewal of the license for his slaughter-house in rural section 10-l; aho letter from the We.it ChrUtchurch School Committee and
petitions— one in favour of Mr Bull's application and the other against it. The Committee desired the whole Council to consider the matter. Councillor Jono9 explained that Mr Bull had promised to hare v petition in his favour presented to tho Committee by four o'clock. At the time when the Committee met tho petition had not reached them. They had, thereforo, written a report, which, however, was how withdrawn. Tho petition in favour of Mr Bull bore 38 signatures, aud tho other boi'o 27Mr Bull stated that those who supported his application lived nearer tho slaughterhouse than tho3e who opposed it. He could bring mothers of families who had lived alongside, and liad never had any sickness. Dr Kusaell had spoken in tho highest terms of the cleanliness of the slaughterhouse premises. Councillor Comber stated that the Committee had inspected Mr Bull's premises, and found them in an unsatisfactory condition. Since then, great improvements had been made, and he believed Mr Bull would make any more that were needed. Councillor Jones found that thoso living nearest the slaughterhouses petitioned against it. The Sanitary Committee's report was adopted. Councillor Day moved — " That Mr Bull's application be granted, subject to the conditions to bo required by the Committee." Councillor Gledhill seconded the resolution. Councillor Langdown would support the resolution, provided it was understood that if any further complaints were made, the license would not be renewed next year. Councillor Bowden opposed the licensing of premises so near the town. Councillor Forrester supported the resolution with the conditions suggested. After Bomo further discussion, the resolution was agreed to, the Council reserving power to cancel the license during tho twelvemonth. A division WH3 called for, and the only dissentient wa3 Councillor Bowden. The report of the deputation to the Minister of Public Works waa read as follows : — " The deputation appointed to interview toe hon the Minister of Public Works respecting tho appointment of crossingkeepers at the Park road and Selwyh street railway crossings, had an interview with him on Jan. 21. The Minister pror mised to get the question reported upon by the officers of his department from the point of view taken by the deputation, and would inform the Council of the result." The report was received. i BURGESS BOLL. Councillor Gledhill moved—" That the Mayor, Councillors Forrester and Jones be requested to certify on the Burgess 801 lto the correctness of tho alterations made thereto by this Council at its last meeting." Councillor Comber seconded the resolution, which was unanimously agreed to. The Council then adjourned.
