GREYMOUTH, Dec. 24. j The Star of the South, as she lies, was J put up to auction to-day, but there was no bid. Her position is unaltered, and she is not likely to be damaged unless a strong north-west wind sets in. Her masts still stand. DUNEDIN, Dec. 24. The Premier having advised the Land Board that under the existing law an inquiry into the suspected dummyism at Tuapeka West cannot take place at Lawrence, it has been decided to hold it in Dunedin in the ordinary way. The Commissioners will make an inspection of tho land in the district beforehand. The Harbour Board has decided to take no steps in regard to the construction of I the eastern breakwater at the Heads at j present. Ono hundred and twenty-five passengers j left by the night train to Christchurch, • and about fifty for intermediate stations. { Mr Nancarrow, Chief Inspector on machii nery for the Colon}', was presented with a ' portrait iu oils of himself to-night, by Mr , M'Carg, Chief Engineer, of tho Rotomahana, ! on behalf of the Marine Engineers of the Colony. _______________________
