The weather in the morning was all that could be desired, but at about 2 o'clock a steady drizzle set in, and is still continuing. HANDICAP HURDLE RACE, of 30 sovs ; second horse 5 sors from stake. Campbell's bni Madge, lOst 21b (inc 21b overweight ... (Mr G. Murray Aynsley) t Mr J. Smith's g g Bordeaux, aged, 9st 61b (Wails) 0 Betting : 3to 1 on Ravenswood, 4to 1 ag_t any other. Bordeaux was quickest away, and negotiated the first hurdle half a length ahead of Ravenswood, Madge bringing up the rear. After going a furlong Bordeaux went clean away from the field, but ran off at the second obstacle, and Ravenswood took command three lengths in front of Berrington. This lead he steadily increased, and passed the stand with a six lengths advantage. At the back of the course, Stewart steadied Ravenswood, and at the last hurdle was three lengths in front of Berrington. When fairly in the straight Kingham shook the latter up, and catching Stewart napping, overhauled Ravenswood, and the latter, when set going again, was only able to get on even terms again on the post, and a dead heat was the the result. Madge was a fair third. The dead heat is to be run off after the Cup. MAIDEN PLATE, of 25 sovs; for all horses that have not won an advertised race of 10 sovs or over, in one event, of public money. From a pretty start the colours of Faro and Flirt were first to be* seen in front, closely followed by Silver Queen and Mermaid. As they approached the stand, Flirt fell back, and Silver Queen joined Faro, and the pair raced together for half a mile, with Mermaid a length away. At the back of the course, Silver Queen shot her bolt, and Mermaid took her place and kept company with Faro until the distance was reached, when Derritt let Faro out, and having Mermaid in difficulties won with something in hand by a length, Urland a fair third. After considerable delay at«the post the flag fell to a fairly good start, and Rally and the Castille filly were quickest on their legs, attended by Ploughboy, while Supplejack and Water King brought up the rear. Rally led the filly by a length past the stand, Ploughboy the .same distance away thir<J. Thinoorder was unaltered for half the distance, Dht at the five-furlong post Ploughboy went into second place. Half a mile from home Water King went through and supplanted Ploughboy, and, at the turn into the straight, was on Rally's quarters, and Ploughboy again made an effort. A splendid race then ensued to the post between the three, and after a desperate finish, resulted in a head victory for cially, Water King beating Ploughboy by half a head for second place.
