♦ ' Mr Isaac Selby will lecture at the Theatre Roy.il on Sunday evening. Subject - " Abraiiam, Isaac and Jacob." Church Services, Christinas Festivities, Canterbury Society of Arts, Theatre Royal, and Inquests, will be found on our fourth page. Mr Walter K. Eishop, of Wellington, advertising and corresponding agent, is a candidate fcr one of the seats on the Government Insurance Board. He is himself a policy holder, and purposes, if elected, to watch the interests of Friendly Societies as closely as possible. The House Steward of the Christchurch Hospital wishes to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of the following Christmas presents for the patients : — Strawberries and pineapples from Mrs Oram, Royal Hotel ; one lamb from Miss Waterfield, Upper Riccarton ; strawberries and 5s towards Destitute Patients Fund, from Mr J. Slater, H.M. Customs ; strawberries from Mrs E. C. J. Stevens, Inglefield ; strawberries and tobacco, from Mr T. A. Klingenstein ; flowers from the Lyttelton Wesleyan Sunday school ; and periodicals from Mr A. R. Inwood, Southbridge. There was no formal sitting of the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning. A dozen offenders accused of drunkenness, and in some cases of disorderly conduct, were released on bail to appear at the Court to-morrow; Frederick Lane, charged with threatening to do grievous bodily harm to his wife Jane Lane, and Thomas Jenkins, who was found on certain premises without lawful excuse, were both remanded by Mr Beetham at the Police Station till the following day. Rather later in the .forenoon Constable Xhiggan arrested a man -named Charles James Holmes, under a warrant charging him with obtaining ,£1 by false representations from Mr Lawson Ridley, at Rangiora, on Nov. 15 last. At the Durham street Wesleyan Church yesterday service was conducted at 7 a.m. by the Rev E. Best, there being a fair congregation. The rev gentleman took for his lesson Luke ii, and for his text 2 Cor., "wiii., 9, "For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your eake he became poor, that ye, through his poveity, might be rich." Tho lesson drawn "was the wonderful condescension of the Son of God in descending to earth, and laying aside his infinite riches and glory for the redemption of man, an event which the preacher considered should be commemorated with all the outward manifestations of sacred joy the world was capable of. There was no special musical service afc-this church Another demonstration in connection with the Salvation Army Congress took place at 2 p.m. to-day. The various contingents, home and foreign, assembled to the number of 500 or 600 in front of the Gaiety Theatre, where they were marshalled by •* Captain Barritt, A.D.C." As nearly as could be ascertained that is the correct title of the individual with the pith helmet, adorned with a broad red band, whose stentorian tones were heard ■directing the movements. As soon as "Majora" Howard and Pollard arrived the procession moved forward; and here it may be noted that the' members of the Army have acquired some better proficiency in marching than they had formerly. The demonstration was almost exactly a repetition of that held on, Christina- Day, and after parading the town for nearly an hour, during which they had the misfortune to be caught in a shower, a halt was made at the Tuam street Hall, where a monster meeting was held, conducted by the two Majors.
