[Rettter's Telegrams.] MELBOURNE, Dec. 23. Mr Service has received a telegram from the Agent-General in London, confirming the news published to-day by Reuter's Agency regarding German annexation in New Guinea and the Western Pacific. Mr Murray Smith adds that there is some hope of further negotiations taking place with reference to New Guinea, and that he has written to Lord Derby drawing attention to the last three resolutions on the subject passed by the Intercolonial Convention at Sydney. Mr Service sent telegrams to all the Colonial Governments, inviting them to unite in protesting against the action of the German Government. The Manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, of New Zealand, Limited, reports on the local markets as follows : — Wheat, 3s 5d to 3s 6d, with rather more enquiry at reduced prices ; malting barley, 4s to 4s 4d, and slightly improved tendency. New Zealand oats, feeding sorts, sluggish, 3s 4d to 3s 7d ; ditto milling ditto dull, 3s 7d to 3s Bd. New Zealand oats, under bond, slow of sale, at 2s 9d to 2s lid. Sailed — Tarawera, s.s.> for the Bluff.
[Per Press Association.] QUARTZ CRUSHING. WESTPORT, Dec. 23. The last clearing up at the Red Queen's mine, Mokihinui, produced 301czs lldwts of retorted gold from 80 tons of stone. The entire crushing thus gives 6340zs of retorted gold from 300 tons of quartz.
