Industrial Association.
_^, A special meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Industrial Association was held at 7.30 p.m. yesterday, for the purpose of considering a communication from Mr Callis, Secretary of the New «.ealand Industrial Exhibition ; present— Messrs J. L. Scott (President), F. Jenkins, E. H. Banks, E. Shanks, C. M. Gray, T. Danks, and F. Jones. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Messrs H. B. Kirk and J. Waller. The President stated that Mr Jenkins and himself had given all the assistance they could to Mr Callis, when that gentle- [ man was in Christchurch. Mr T. O. Kelsey i had offered his services to represent the j Association at the Exhibition to be held in London in 1886. I The following report from Mr F. Jenkins I was read : — " Dear Sir, — Will you kindly lay the following information before the Committee : At an interview with yourself and some members of the Association, it was suggested that I could considerably aid Mr Callis in his efforts to obtain further information during his stay in Christchurch, and having the time at my disposal, I accepted the suggestion, and accordingly introduced Mr Callis to a large number of the various manufacturers, to whom he explained the object the GovernI ment had in view, viz., to test from time [ to time the advancement which is being made in the various industries that give employment to labour. He likewise pointed out the advantages that would be derived by holding the first Exhibition in j Wellington, whilst Parliament was in session, thus bringing the legislators face to face with our manufacturers and pro- ! ducers. Mr Callis was courteously received wherever he called, and I think he has every reason to be satisfied with the heartiness which the manufacturers have displayed in taking the matter up. Judging by the promised support and the quantity of space likely to be applied for, I have no doubt but that Canterbury will be well represented at the forthcoming Exhibition. It was not possible to visit every individual manufacturer and producer, owing to the limited time at our disposal, Mr Callis being fully engaged in his work until within an hour of the steamer leaving for Wellington. He informed me that when he had arranged preliminaries, the official programme would be issued, at an early date, when applications for space would be received. Mr Callis expressed his thanks to the Association and manufacturers for the assistance accorded to him during his stay in Christchurch." The afetion of the President and Mr Jenkins was approved. With regard to Mr Kelsey's offer, it was decided that it would be premature to enter into negotiations on the subject as yet. , A telegram was read from Mr Callis, : stating that 50, copies each of the official i programme and application for space forms had been posted. (These were laid on the table.) The telegram requested that a local Committee should be formed for Canterbury, and asked the Association to forward any suggestions they might deem advisable. The President thought that it would be necessary to appoint a local Secretary to attend to matters connected with the Ex- ; hibition. ! After a desultory discussion, it was de- ! cided to ask the Government how far they I were prepared to go in the direction of i paying for the clerical assistance that would be required, l The Committee then adjourned,
