Boxing Day Attractions.
* The holiday-makers on Boxing Day will have no reason to complain of want of means of amusing themselves. They will have the choice of some half-dozen gatherings during the day, to say nothing of the theatre and other places of amusement in the evening. First among the day's "fixtures" stands the cricket match between tho chosen elevens of Otago and this Province, which is to take place at Lancaster Park. Lovers of horse-racing will doubtless find much enjoyment on the Lower Heathcote racecourse, where what promises to be the best meeting ever held there is to come off. The village sports at Papanui should be the means of drawing a large number of visitors to that pretty and progressive suburb. The athletic sports at Halswell, though rather far from town, ■will, of course, receive a large share of patronage from the surrounding district ; and, perhaps, some individuals from town may elect to "put in" the day there. His Excellency the Governor has generously granted the Foresters of Christchurch the use of the grounds at Elmwood, and the gathering of the men in green and their friends will not be the least pleasant of those that are to be held on Boxing Day. The Friendly Societies of Lyttelton and Woolston are also to have their outing, the scene of which is to be the Heathcote Valley j where games of divers kinds, music and dancing should make the hours pass pleasantly enough. Those persons who wish to " make a regular day of it " 1 can wind up Oy witnessing- Sardou's comedy ■ " A Scrap of Paper," at the Theatre Royal i or by going to the Oddfellows' Hall, tc s laugh at the amusing " specialties " ol I Clark and Eyman's little Company.
