CANTERBURY ROWING CLUB.

Notwithstanding the unfavourable weather on Saturday, the first heats of the Canterbury Rowing Club's Senior Sculls and Trial Pairs were got off as announced, with^he results as under : — Senior Sculls in skiffs. One mile (handicap). First heafc. — J. Grierson, scratch, 1 ; E. M. Boulton, tero lengths, 2. Grierson had caught his man by the time Cowlishaw's was reached, and led to the finish, winning by a length. Second heat. — A. L. Smith, four lengths, 1 ; S. E. Wright, four lengths, 2. Smith went away from the start, and, steering a better course than his opponent, won by four lengths. Third heat. — M. Lean, four lengths, 1 ; A. Laurie, four lengths, 2. Laurie led at the start, but at the half-mile Lean drew iup level, and, after a hard race, won by half a length. Fourth heat. — F. W. Dunnage, six lengths, 1 ; F. K. Dunsford, six lengths, 2. Dunsford was quite out of form for rowing, and Dunnage, who pulled in good style, •won. easily by tv.o lengths. Trial Paies; One Mile. First Heat — C. Stewart and E. Campbell, 1 ; C. Turner and S. Muter, 2. Turner led for the first half-mile, when his want of training told, and Stewart and Campbell went to the front and won by three lengths. Second Heat— W. Colebrook and A. L. Baird, 1 ; W. T. Edgar, and W. Boulton, 2. Colebrook started at a fast stroke and soon obtained a lead of two lengths, which he kept to the finish despite the exertions of Edgar and his mate. Third Heat — J. Laurie and W. Macbeth, 1 ; H. IJ . Rich and E. C. Eich, 2. This was thought to be an ea3y thing for Laurie, but the two Eichs pulled pluckily and kept even with them as far as the bridge, when H. Eich was obliged to stop rowing through faintness, and Laiu-ie paddled in, alone. Fourth Heat— Colebrook and Baird, 1 ; Stewart and Campbell, 2. Colebrook and Baird again started with a great rush, and although hard pushed ajl the way by j Stewart and Campbell, wou by two lengths. j The final heats vrill be rowed this even- ! ing. __.
