Construction of Locomotives.

[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Deo. 16. A deputation from the/ Trades and Labour Council and Chamber of Manufacturers waited on the Hon E. Richardson to-day in reference to the construction of locomotives in the Colony. It transpired that Mr Hendry, Chairman of the Council, had surreptitiously obtained a printed copy of the specifications, which have not yet been made public, Mr Eichardson asked how ho had obtained tho copy, but Mr Hendry declined to say. As it is, however, the copy so obtained had since heen considerably modified. The deputation also heard that locomotives were to be subjected to the test of running 100 miles, and if they did not answer would be condemned. Mr Eichardson stated that this was incorrect. It was also stated that certain parts of the machinery could not bo made in the Colony. The Minister said Government were willing to do everything in their power to encourage the manufacture of engines. Only payments of 90 per cent will be made. That the 'Treat thing was to have the whole machinery constructed ; in tho Colony even if they had to pay a ; higher price for the engines j but Governi inent recognised that certain parts, such • as tubing, __e., would require to be in-i- --; ported. Ton engines are to be made in two ■ years, the first to be handed over in • eighteen months. Government would i supply a locomotive as a model, so that no : mistake might bo made as to nieasure- , ments.
