Meetings of Societies.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Leeston Lodge of Oddfellows was held in their Lodge-room at Spring's Hotel, on Monday evening last, at which there was a good attendance of brethren. A motion of condolence and sympathy with their medical officer, Dr Chapman, in his late bereavement, was unanimously carried, and the Secretary was instructed to write to Dr Chapman, conveying the feeling of the Lodge. An account of the North Canterbury District meeting, which was held in Christchurch on Nov. 20, was received from the delegate, P.G. Bro Barrell, the principal business being to form an A.M.C. for New Zealand, which would give the Society greater facilities for working. Several alterations were also considered for amending the Friendly Societies Act. The Lodge having passed a vote of thanks to Bro Barrell for his report, closed in due form. The third anniversary of the East Malvern Band of Hope was celebrated on Tuesday evening by a tea and public meeting. There was a good attendance at both, and the proceedings were altogether successful. Rev P. W. Jones presided during the evening, and addresses were given by the Chairman, Eev J. Maxwell, and Mr J. Gill. A selection of Temperance melodies were very nicely rendered by a choir, under the direction of Mr J. Lord.' Mr Tresidder presided at the organ during the evening.
