UNITED C.C. v. LANCASTER PARK.

Probably it was owing to recent want of practice (through rain and other causes), that this match on Saturday was productive of so little good cricket. It is true that neither club was playing its full strength, the United in particular having to lament the absence of W. J. Cotterill, R. D. Harman, and Eoss. However in R. B. Mathias they found one worthy substitute, and there were men engaged good enough, on a perfect wicket and in glorious weather, to have treated the onlookers to something better than what was seen en Saturday. The U.C.C., going in, at once lost Higgins, and Longden, who looked like scoring, was unlucky enough to cut a ball which just stuck in the tips of short slip's fingei-3. Helmore made one fine leg hit, which misfielding turned from a one to a five. W. M'Dowall and E. J. Cotterill did less. Millton and Harold Mathias, however, collared the bowling, which displayed a strong partiality for the leg-side. As the j ordinary changes proved quite ineffective, a long stand looked Imminent. In this emergency the Lancastrian Captain did not disdain to try W. P. Reeves with underhand Results — much laughtei-, and the dismissal of four batsmen, bowled by slow grubbers. The fielding of the Park men, despite one or two errors, was good, and Dunlop sent down some good overs. His last, off which R. B. Mathias made 10, by good hard leg hits, was not of that description. Millton gave no chance, but was not as consistent in his leg hitting a3 usual. The Lancastrian batting wa3 not up to the mark. Reeves, who was allowed a man to run for him, had the pleasure of watching his substitute run out. "Wilding, aided by some luck, made 23, but the others, bar Harley, who acquitted himself in promising style, did nothing. Longden made a pretty catch in the slips ; and the fielding, poor at first, improved later on: Score so far : — U.o.C. Fir3tlnniu£js. W. Y. Millton, b W. P. Eeeves 38 E. Higgins, b Dunlop 0 A.
