I FIRES. INVERCARGILL, August 28. At the Supreme Courc, iv the case Mildenhall v. Stevens heard yesterday, counsel for defendant moved for judgment to be stayed on the ground that the verdict Avas against the Aveight of evidence and damages were excessive. Mr Justice Williams refused the application. The jury Avere quite entitled to judge of the evidence brought before theni, and the damages he did not think excessive. In the divorce case Kean v. Kean and Ayhvard, the verdict Avas for petitioner, with ,£IOO damages. In the divorce case Sorensen v. Sorensen and Watson the verdict Avas for the husband, avlio was petitioner, Avith <£20 damages. In the Ncav Zealand Agricultural Company v. Pagan and Dickson, tho Company recovered £ti4>o interest on the purchase of Ardlussa Station, Avhich defendants had failed to complete. Dennehay's general store at Wyndham was destroyed by fire shortly after midnight, caused, it is supposed, by the overheating of a stove. The insurances Avere : — <£150 on the building in the South British and .£350 on the stock, divided betA\ r een tho Equitable and Standard. The building and stock Avere valued at £1150. By a fire in a sitting-room of the Aparima \ Hotel, Riverton, at 3 o'clock this morning, « a quantity of furniture, including a piano, | Avas destroyed. Insured in the New Zea- < land office. Some damage Avas done to the building. '
