Thirty years since, when Dr Smith first oom menced practice here, it was thought by medioal" men that to be a specialist was derogatory to the professional man, but this, like most other innovations in scientific and lay matters, was found rather to aid than to be " infra dig " to that profession, wherein the speciality was practised. Lallemand and Ricord, in France, and Aoton, in England, wero for years cried down by their medioa brethren. Now and for many past years they have been looked np to, and quoted, by every man who pretends to have auv knowledge of the particular branch of the profession whioh those gentlemen specially devoted themselves to. It was the same with Erasinuß Wilson, the "Skin Dootor," cently i'nigbted by Her Majesty. Years since, it was the same with DrL. L. Smith, of Melbourne, who practised (as did Lallemand and Ricord) as a specialist, in all cases of diseases and habits which produce symptoms of Nervous Affections, of Skin Eruptions, of Prostration, and make human beings invirile, or which unfit them to carry on the purposes of their being, or which de» monstratcs itself, on the other hand, in Eruptive Diseases and Secondary Forms of Affections. In all of these cases how nccessaiy it is to have ths Specialist who has devoted his whole lifetime to the studying and practising in this one branoh ol his profession P Hence, now, after so many years, all minutioj ore familiar to him, and symptomß wtoloii (it is not unreasonable to snpposo) may not strike the General Practitioner at once, now from oon. stant practice and observation make Dr L. L, Smith master of the subject. The medical profession (that is, the more libera] minded of tbem) have likewise recognised thiß faotfc and Specialists now in every brancli—oonlißts, aurists, syphilic, mental diseases, chest diseases, and in fact every portion of the human frame, has now some member of the profession who devotee his time to that, and to none othor. For instance, the " chest doctor " would ou no account attend an accouchement, and the oculist would not think of 1 sotting a broken log; but each would advise hit j patient to go to that doctor who is most famed for treating tho disease requiring special skill. Dr L. L. Smith asks those wh» require treatment for Weakness, Prostration, Barrenness, and St* rility, whose frames and whose constitutions are shattered, to consult him as an expert---thirty (30) years' practice in this Colony, with a practice ex. tending throughout not only the Colonies, but in India, China, Fiji, and even in England, he olaime ought to be sufficient to cause every man or woman requiring such skill as is alluded to above, to oonsuit him either personally or by letter. As a syphilograpber no other medical man has been able to have such largo experience as he possesses, nnd for other allied affections, suoh ss nervous disease, no one in tho profession has en joyed so much publio confidence. DR L. L. SMITH, Consulation Fee bt Lettkb, MlMedicines appropriately packed and orwarded over tho civilised globe. DR L. L. SMITH, 182, Collins steiiet east, ttiiDOvnsa, 65
